Hey Guys,
I'm looking for some advise regarding the removal of the paint on my 72.
Any suggestions on the best way of removing the paint......... Paint strippers vs. sanding and any comments on how they would affect the fiberglass.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Stripper works the best. Just make sure to rinse off the stripper with water. Then, take a scotch brite and wash the bare fiberglass with soap and water. Then, rinse it again.
I had 9 layers on my 74. I used a combination of techniques. If the paint is only moderately adhered to the car, then a razorblade and scraper will peel it of nicely. But, it usually wont remove everything down to the fiberglass. Then I applied "BIX" stripper(Home Depot) on the remaining paint/primers. After 15/20 minutes, you can scrape off the remaining layers. I then went over the car with 180 grit paper and a hand sander down to the fiberglass. One word of advise....the razor/stripper will soften and remove some of the body filler where your fenders are bonded. Expect to do some minor body work also where the razor will occasionly nick the fiberglass
