I've read the forum and saw posts that pertained to being blinded by people in windshield mounted rear view. Restoring a C3 i went to a junk yard to get a rear view mirror. Having a hard time finding one that was in good shape i came across a later model jeep grand cherokee with a rear view that has a sensor that will make it auto adjust to keep from blinding the driver. I pulled it and clipped the wiring harness which consists of 5 wires, gray being the wire color they were striped as follows gray/purple, gray/white,gray/yellow, then gray/pink,possibly red, and then an all gray wire. Does anyone know where i can get the color code for this so i can hook it up? There is a switch i presume turns it on and off on the mirror. I'd love to incorporate this mirror into my restoration car & i'd appreciate any advice.
I'll be finishing my car in the next few weeks then i can finally post its picture in my profile, thanks for any advice
I would look for a Jeep Forum
The C3's are such low cars that most every car that gets behind me has their headlights right in my rear view, and to make matters worse my 33 year old windshiels looks like its been sandblasted so oncoming traffic is just as bad
Pretty interesting driving at night to say the least
You would have to hook it up the body control ecm to work. The ecm controls all the funtions like compass, self dimming, etc. I install a late model Lumina in mine. It's got working map lights and the turn on when you open the door.
i'm not sure what ecm is, with 5 wires, 1 would be ground, 1 hot, 1 would be for illumination of the button switch to night, that leaves two wires i can't account for.
this rear view doesn't have any lights or anything. I'll ask a friend for some input on where or who i can get answers from. I'd really like to make this mirror work
ok budman i am assuming an ecm takes in the light signal, then sends a signal back to the mirror to dim so essentially my mirror is useless without it?

No...it still reflects images. You just have a feature that you cannot use YET. Install the mirror, and work on finding the correct ECU. I would extend the wires by splicing in, and leave them tied off maybe down behind the passenger side dash pad. Then when you find the ECU information, you can pull off that knee pad, install the ECU and you're in business.
i'm gonna try and get the ecm out of the grand cherokee before it is hauled off. thanks everyone for your input it is so helpful.
Got my car together for the most part today. Not putting glove box in before installing dash..BIG MISTAKE! along with a few other mistakes i actually installed seats today and took it for a ride. Can't wait til the cushions break in. I've had this car almost 10 yrs and haven't put 2k miles on it.Only thing not new is A/C, transmission, rear end, radiator.
I installed a self-dimming mirror a couple of years ago. It came from a late model GM vehicle.
It was one of the best mods I've ever done.
The only input from an ecm was to tell the mirror the car was in 'reverse' so as to disable the self-dimming when backing up. This was a 12-volt signal, so I didn't need the ecm; just hooked it to the backup light switch in the consol.
i've got a halogen light i'll make a few alligator clip jumpers and tinker with it. my mirror is strictly dimmer, no lights or anything just a button to enable and disable. I'll post the results.
I was just replacing mine this past weekend....with just a plain jane type....but it got me thinking about the original glass on my 81....it has some bad scratching on the drivers side from a wiper blade gone missing (previous owner). How much is new glass, and what about trim...will it be damaged during removal.?
ok everyone referring to the rear view i got out of a late model grand cherokee which only has dimmer, no vanity type lights or compass or any of that just strictly dimmer i tested the 5 wires using the plain gray as ground. I found using the solid gray wire and the gray/w purple were the only wires i needed to hook up and it worked. The sensor eye is built into this particular mirror so it was all done inside the mirror. I must say i did hook up two wires that made the mirror smell of plastic. Evidently there are two ground wires. I could see what appeared to be a circuit board through a crack so maybe it warmed up and i smelled the plastic . Anyway i went with the two wires i found that it would react on and it worked so evidently i didn't burn anything all the way through. The switch worked and it would light up when i had it cut on. This was done in my home with a battery and a halogen light. When i removed the light it would gradually go back to normal
Sadly it will be some time before i can actually hook it up in the car and test it on the road because i cracked a rib and i am stuck in one position and trying not to do anything that will cause me to even clear my throat.
With that said i think i'm gonna really like this mirror and as some of you have found others that work differently this one went well except i did touch two wrong wires.
...i cracked a rib and i am stuck in one position and trying not to do anything that will cause me to even clear my throat...
You cracked a rib checking the mirror out????
Hehehe, I cracked 2 ribs years ago when I passed out after a few drinks. I went over like a tree and landed full length on my side. As I hadn't tried to save myself, my arm was by my side and I actually landed on my elbow which cracked the ribs!
I think I'll try one of those mirrors as I need to replace mine anyway. There's only about 50% of the reflective stuff left, the rest is an interesting black mosaic pattern...
I must say i did hook up two wires that made the mirror smell of plastic.
For future reference to any member doing this swap in the future, can you make a color coded wire list of each wire from that mirror and what it connects to? Example:
Red: Battery
Black: Ground
Ect...
Get the idea? I know a lot of guys here, having driven at night, would LOVE this swap. PLease give us the correct color and function so we don't cross any wrong wires. Thanks.
