I have been looking at a lot of different crate motor options for my 1980 350 AT with 3.55 rear end. I am looking at the edelbrock 9.0 :1 320 hp/382 tq. cam spec's 204 I 214 E lift .420/.442. Secondly the Marshall Blueprint 383 9.5:1 405hp/440 tq. cam spec's .234 I .244 E lift .487/.508. Would there be a noticeable seat of the pants difference in acceleration? Would the Marshall 383 have a rough idle with those type of cam spec's ? All comments would be appreciated. Thanks
I think you would like the marshall engine as long as you went to a
2500 stahl converter. the engine with the 204 .050 int dur is a little on the two mild side. crane cams remake of chevys old 327/300 hp cam
has 190s .050 int. dur.

The Mardhall 383 comes with what looks like a high rise air gap type of manifold that may cause clearance issues even with a drop base manifold. Would that engine still perform at near spec's with a lower Rpm vortec type of manifold? I am also concerned that the idle on the 383 might be very rough ?? I would not be opposed to a little bit of lope but I do not want it if it were excessive.
A 383 with around 224 int .050 dur would probably be more to your liking for idle quality and running a stock converter, a 383
with 224 int dur. would be ok, with 234 int dur you would need to
get rid of a stock convs. 1600-1800 stahl. going to a good low
rise intake would cost around a 20 hp loss in power.
I am not opposed to changing the torque converter to a higher stall to get a respectable launch but I do not want an idle that is too extreme for simple cruising.
