Anyone know what a good price on a rebuilt trans for the 1978 anniversary edition would be? The one I have needs a diaper! I'm in So Cal.. Any suggestion on place to buy would also be usefull. THANKS!
Do you know where it's leaking from? Is the tranny working fine otherwise? I just went through this on my 81 and between the removal and the masive oil change, I damaged some of the internals.
Most of the external seals can be changed in place. If all that you're trying to do is stem the leaks, you may be able to avoid a rebuild.
Just to answer your original question, a rebuild will likely run you around $1100.
I have also had a problem with leaks on my 81 to the point i picked one of those drip pans. First it was the Shift Linkage seal on the passenger side. Replaced that now it the speedo cable is leaking on the drivers side. I plan to replace that one next week. I would suggest getting under and hosing of the tran as best you can and try to determine where the leak is coming from. A rebuild is expensive. I had a local mech change the first one for less that $60. I suspect the speedo may be a little more.
The speedo is actually pretty easy. You have to unscrew the speedo cable first. You'll find a retainer bolt on the side of the cable hookup that you need to undo. The housing will then pull out. There is an o-ring inside that is probably the cause of the leak. It's also possible that the speedo drive gear is worn out and the leak is there. Doc Rebuild and Ecklers has these if it needs to be replaced.
My '78 TH350 was leaking so bad, I gave up and let a shop upgrade and fix the leaks. Cost about $1000 with hi-stall convertor. Had to take back 3 time for seal leaks in the front, back and shifter. One time they broke the pressure line to the radiator...what a mess. At this point I still have slow leak out of the shifter. Oil drip pan and newspaper.... change news paper once a month.

1100 Seems like a price to drop off your car and have them do it. i have had 3 th350's rebuilt, and a th400 and with shift kit, all good parts and a 3000 stall converter the most i ever spent was $850. but i also always pulled the transmissions myself and dropped them off.
I put a Hughes TH350 and a Hughes HD2500 stall TC in my '78 about a year ago and haven't looked back. I LOVE that tranny. I spent about 1500 bucks but that included everything....trans, TC, secondary cooler, etc.
Bought everything through Summit
