I'm looking to buy a scattershield for my car and have noticed that lakewood sells two different bellhousings. The first is an SFI approved scattershield which sells for $315. The second is what they call an engine to transmission adaptor that costs $230 but is not SFI paproved. Both are constructed of 1/4 steel.
So my question is, do I really need the SFI approved version? After all, this is a street car not a race car. I know some will say "don't be cheap, buy the SFI version", but I'm just trying to be reasonable - plus I'm trying to keep costs down a bit. Granted my BB will be pushing about 550 HP, but the RPM's will be relatively low (<6000 RPM). I figure either would be a vast improvement over the stock aluminum bellhousing.
What do you guys think?

I would go with McLeod. I bought an approved version for $234 on E-bay new. I have heard they have closer tolerances than Lakewood.

I have to agree with Mako go with McLeod. Red has great products.
As to your other question do you really need an SEI housing. Well I guess you do not need it. But the real question is should you have it. If you have ever witnessed a clutch assembly come apart the answer would be easy. Sure you might go your whole life without this happening but I assure you it only takes one time to find religion.

I always thought McLeod was quite a bit more expensive than the Lakewood housings. I guess I'll have to spend a bit of time on E-bay and see what I find. I've heard they make a nice product.
I really wonder how much extra protection the (lakewood) SFI version gives you though. Both are 1/4" steel, it would be interesting to compare both side by side.
