Default Rock Chip/Paint Question

Just curious..has anyone succesfully filled in their rock chips and blended it with the paint? Right in front of my rear fenders there are a few(common place I am sure). I don't want to repaint the whole car, but I have to replace the bumpers anyway and I was just wondering if a body shop can do it seamlessly?

I have not tired the 123 yet, but am considering it for a winter project.

Explain what you mean by custom. Different things to different people.

Try using Langka. I didnt check if those links were for Langka. I used it on my white 88 and it works great!!! You blob some touch up paint on it and wait a week or so. Use the Langka and it knocks the bubble down where it fills in the scratch. I have heard it doesnt work as well on darker colored cars....Try it ..you have nothing to lose. I am pretty sure this is the link... www.langka.com

I went to a local auto paint store & asked if they could match the paint. The owner went out to my car with something that looked like a Polaroid camera. I think is was something like a spectromoter. Anyway, he set this device on my fender and snapped a "picture". When inside and connected it to a computer which provided him with the formula. The paint he mixed was a dead on match!

I took my gas lid off and dropped it at the paint store, the guy mixed up some paint that matches perfectly. You can do this if your gas lid is the same color as the rest of your car

John, got your email..Thanks very much! It will help out a lot. My only concern as others have stated is matching the color. I have the "Bright Yellow" but it has been repainted and I don't know how close it is to that.

I guess the good news is that my body man will be painting my new bumpers for it and he will have to match them as well and I guess I can use some of that paint if there is some left over.

So I go to my local car paint store ? I don't have any idea where I can get car paint, tons of body shops around though but I wouldn't want to try and get anything directly through them.

If I can get someone to match the paint that's half the battle.

vetteman1978 can you send me your proceedure ?

To answer the question about custom paint, it means there is no paint code for it, that's all.

I read and followed someones article on touching up chips. You make sure the chip is completly clean. Next you very carefully sand just the edged the of the chip to smooth them back into the paint.

Then you get a toothpick and put a very small amount of paint in the chip wait a day or so and put some more in until it is almost even with original paint then you wait a week put on the clearcoat and wet sand. I did this but it would have turned out better if I had the correct color

If you have solid colors then paint can be matched. For my 72 non-original color I had the local parts store come to my house and "shoot" the color with their camera. Find a parts store that actually mixes professionally for body shops. Just ask around. They can put an exact match color into a spray can. I use acrylic enamel at their suggestion.

I just finsihed up repairing and patching the lower section of the front bumper area under the grilles. You know; the area by the black spoiler. Lots of cracks and breaks not to mention bad mounting holes and fasteners. I patched with glass filler and sanded . I also took care of about a dozen or so chips while I was down there. Then I cleaned her up and shot with primer/sealer (spray can). Then a couple coats of my custom-mixed red (not mille miglia like I thought) and she looks pretty good. With a little practice you can blend it in.

By no means am I a professional and I would not do this type of work where the area is easily visible. But for door jambs, and undersides of bumpers as well as behind trim this works very well.

Time to sand, patch and paint the lower front: 4-5 hours
Cost of paint, patch and sandpaper: about $30 or so.

Quality on the 1 to 10 scale: give it a six

Now I will clean up the three grilles and the license bracket and install a new spoiler.......

I bought one of those kits you see at the pep boys etc. It has everything but the color. Part of the hit included a small sample packet of special polishing compound. That stuff was amazing! painted the chip with a cut off match stick, clear coat as needed, then rub in one direction using your finger and bam! it is smooth and blended. I was very pleased.

Wish I had kept the package.
