I just pulled the Tach/Speedo panel from my 69 4-speed to replace a broken tach needle and found the speedo cable end at the speedo was gunked up with thick oily goo, and a little bit was on the inside ... I seem to recall hearing of this somewhere before and a bad seal at the trans was the cause... does anyone have any info on this?

Is it the original speedo cable? If so, it's probably just the lubricant they put in the cable. New ones use graphite.
It's common for a speedometer cable to eventually wear out in some form or another. They're like $15 at Kragen/Advance/Checkers/Schucks and they usually actually have them in stock. Might as well replace it since it's so cheap and it's bound to go out on you sooner or later, they all do.
