I am trying to get the electric choke on my 80 corvette to work so I don't have to pump it for 2 minutes to keep it running. A friend told me that the correct wire to connect to the electric choke came from the firewall harness and was light blue in color. That wire seems to have no power whatsoever. I have a wire coming from the same main firewall harness that is red with a small connector and nothing connected to it ? Does anybody know what color the correct wire is for the choke and does the choke require 12 volts of less ? If it is 12 volt I can hook on to this red wire ? thanks
The choke requires a full 12volts. I can't comment on the functions of the colors you mentioned but a good place to get power is the winshield wiper motor feed. It's only active when the ignition switch is on and is 12v.
The red wire I am talking about has 12 volts and comes on with the ignition key . I think I will give it a try until I can find the correct wire. I am going to order a 1980 specific wiring diagram , I think it would be very helpfull sorting out 26 years of Bubba rooting around in the wiring harness of this car ???
The Lt Blue wire is correct, it should have 12v on it witht he key on. It gets its voltage from the Choke Heater Relay. The choke heater relay is off during normal operation with 12v applied to both brown wires on the coil side of the relay. The relay is on only with the key on, If the Diode Trio in the alternator dies, it usually shorts and provides a ground for the Choke relay, this turns off the choke and turns on the alternator light and the choke heater light.
If the relay is unplugged, the choke heater light should also come on, thats a good test to see if the relay works.
If you mean the light on the speedo / tach that says choke , no it is not lit.
Well, that might just mean that there is no light bulb in there. OK, you need to make sure there is a choke relay, i was thinking about this and wondering why your choke was not connected in the first place, Bubba might have deleted it. I'l not sure where exactly the relay is supposed to be located, but it will have 2 brown wires, 1 lt blue wire, and 1 grn/wht wire. I would look for it next
