Default Custom ducting.

I was thinking when I have my dash apart I will do a custom duct system behind the panels. I'm going to leave the stock center housing that rises up to become the defrost vent.

From there, I was thinking of modifying the housing over the door and running hoses to the ball vents instead of the bulky plastic ducts. The other idea I had was adding small in-line tube fans. Like on a wood stove exhaust, but smaller to fit in the tubes. That would give me an increase of air flow.

I was also thinking of making them reversable, so when the defrost is on, the tube fans will create back pressure from the ball vents and add to the defrosts air flow. any thoughts?

Show us pics of the job you do. I don't think you need reversible fans for defrost tho.

I agree with bernie, the defrost works by heating the windshield above the dew point and blowing the condensation thats there dry. So for Defrost/Defog, all you need is warm air to the windshield.
The ducts might be a good idea, I saw some somewhere had something to do with custom AC that should maybe work better than stock parts.
If the plan for the in-line fans if for air volume, I think fixing the ductwork air leaks and an improvement to the existing fan might get you where you want to be. High Speed circuit that gets full alt voltage to the fan motor, maybe a C4 fan and motor..

And you're right, it would be, but there is NO interior in the car right now, AND...putting the old system back together is a PITA big time. It was already held together with duct tape, and I just don't want to hassle with it. I can make one junction box at the door, with a tube for the ball vents and a tube for the center console. I don't need the foot vents aside from the ones already on that center box.

The tube fans were for volume. Maybe a better fan and no leaks will solve the defrost issue but it only worked on chilly days, not cold or humid days. I would have to crack a window to dry the glass.

The C4 fan is a little longer than your fan so you will need to make a spacer to allow for the longer fan. The fan also has more blades with better curvature to push more air. Buy the fan and motor and I think the mid 90's was the vintage you want.

Any idea how big of a spacer? I suppose I could buy it and compare it to my old one. Do you have to remove the whole core box to get it removed? Never done a blower motor before.

Nah, I really couldn't care less about numbers matching...that's why I tossed the tape with no second thoughts. I did like his quality install job...everything was sealed good.
