Default Is This Normal

I recently purchased my first Corvette. It's a 81 and my question is, when I shift it into drive I can feel the rear end sink down about an inch or two. When I shift back to park or neutral the rear end comes back up. Is this normal or is something wrong? The car seems to handle fine. Thanks for any info in advance. I hope that I haven't been asking to many questions.

Yep, it's normal. If it clunks though, that's when you have to check it out.

Normal but make sure your idle is not too high-idle too high makes that dip worse.

What would a clunk indicate?

This is typical with the original fiberglass rear spring and a car of this age. The fiberglass springs don't sag with age like the metal springs but they do get softer. Even more noticeable with old shocks. If the rear feels "floaty" over bumps in the rear I would consider replacing the spring.

It won't hurt anything but it will feel soft in the rear.

Typically "clunk" means check your U joints.

They begin to "clunk" from wear, they become loose or sloppy allowing excessive play, if you here them clunk you can usually move them by hand, or get under the car and have someone put into drive-neutral-drive etc. (carefully, try not to get run over)until you can determine which joints are worn. It can be drive shaft or rear end half shaft joints. If they are worn I would usually replace all, at least all drive shaft or all rear end joints unless they are relatively new and there is a reason one has worn excessivly. It's also possble to get the "clunk" in your transmission, but that is a far bigger problem.
