Maybe it was out of alignment....when I replaced seals in my 78 ram,the shaft looked very slightly tweaked...not enough to bother with in my case...

yes the 2 inner ears broke on this one too. It was the original one judging from the condition I bought the car in 4 years ago. I had one on the shelf in the garage so the car is back on the road.

Alignement was ok, I just rebuilt the system about 2k miles ago.
This happens often if these bolts are left loose.Its a good practice to always check those bolts when relpacing the ram.Sounds like a valuable lesson was learned that all can benifit from.
Gary did you check the frame under the bracket? I have seen the frame crack from the constant bending back and forth under the 2 remaining tight bolts.The frame is overlapped and usually unwelded in that spot hence the step in the bracket.
