1970 454...Cleaned out gas tank...check fuel flow...new fuel filter...no kinking fuel lines...did find a bad spot in one of the vaccum lines and replaced it...do hear hissing noise at vaccum relay valve...when engine shuts down, there is a prolonged sound of air releasing...is this normal?...also, when engine is running, I place finger under vaccum relay valve and it muffles the air sound. Lights and wiper guard work fine. The only thing to try next is working with the plug, wires and/or distributor.
Any suggestions?
Did you blow out the fuel lines? I had another make of car that had been sitting for a while with a full tank of fuel. car would start but after running for a while it would just shut off. but after sitting a while would restart and run for a while longer.had the tank drained and cleaned out. got the car back. installed fuel filter along with a new fuel pump. same problem. turned out to be a partially clogged fuel line from tank to fuel pump.
does it start right back up without any probems after it dies? when does it die? idle? driving? cold/hot? and so on.
if you suspect the vaccum relay, bypass it (plug it off) and test your theory. you might be on the right track.
a tune up never hurts one, if it hasnt had one in awhile. i would suggest upgrading your points to a breakerless system. cheap, easy to install and very reliable.
Tuesday, I pulled it out of the garage and cranked it. It sat there and idled for about 10-12 minutes while I was playing aroung with the vaccum lines. I shut it off to go inside for a minute. When I tried to restart it, it would not start. When I checked the fuel flow, I had the engine bumped two times. Do U think that was enough to check the flow?
