Can anyone tell me what would cause the engine to run well initially, then rough when the engine has come up to temperature. Also, as the tranny shifts ( Auto 3-speed ), it slams into gear, again after it has warmed up. The engine has a high rise manifold with a Holly four. I've had the choke, vacuum and timing checked.

If the choke and timing are OK, check for vacuum leaks. The 79 has lots of opportunities for them. A simple test would be to warm up the engine, remove the breather and partially cover the carb with your hand. If the RPM's increase, you've probably got a vac leak some where.

As far as the tranny "slamming" into gear, I'm wondering if it possible that you might really just experiencing a broken tranny mount. The tranny mount can be easily checked by attempting to jack up the tranny a little and observing the mount located at rear of the tranny and attached to the cross member.

Thanks for the info. Had the timing checked again and it was really off. I will check the mount on the tranny.
