Default Intake Manifold Questions?

1) Is the stock intake manifold on a 1980 L48 aluminum or cast Iron?

2) What is the best way to clean (remove grease, stains, paint, etc.) the manifold up, assuming it is off the engine? (I'm thinking blasting it, but what type of media?)

3) Once the manifold is off the engine, is it worth the effort to clean it up or should I purchase an Eldebrock 2101 or 3701 manifold and stick it on? (Engine is non-numbers matching)

4) If I go the Eldebrock route, will I get any performance increase out of a relatively stock engine (just true duals at this point.)

Thanks for all replys!

For cleaning an old aluminum intake that is corroded, you can use an acid aluminum brightener.

Or just clean it with a good degreaser-Purple something comes to mind and paint the thing to match the engine.

According to Edelbrock you will see a slight increase

I have the 2010 and diddnt see any increase but it allows me to run either a QJet or a Holley as it has the dual pattern.
As far a cleaning aluminum I use Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish

Nevr-Dull works very good as well

All the intakes are aluminum for '80 Vettes. The castings look pretty bad from the factory so they don't clean up that well. Just degrease with simple green, strip off the paint and refinish with several light dustings of argent silver high temp spray paint. That is about as good as it gets.

The Edelbrock Performer is not worth the expense. Keep the stocker unless you are going square bore carb. The Performer RPM might be better but fitting it under the hood can be a little tricky.

the 1980 vette engines, including the "federal" L48 switched to the aluminum intake manifold from the L82. i agree that simple green and a good brush, followed by mothers polish would clean it up. for a stock L48, i doubt there would be any real measurable increase in power with the edelbrock. save that for when tou swap the cam and heads. good luck.]

I replaced my factory 76 L82 manifold with the Edelbrock Performer 3701 and the car seemed more responsive and peppy. Hard to pinpoint how much was due to the manifold because the factory setup had bad gaskets and the old QJet was tired.
