Default New Carb?

I know that a 78' L82 isnt fast, but what I have now is discusting. After looking into it a little bit I found that the lever on the passeger side of my carb isnt opening the seconaries.

My question is for all of the guys who have either re-built or swapped carbs. Is the origional Q-jet the best fit? I dont plan on doing any modifications besides an upgraded ignition system - so maybe the origional is good if it's fresh. I would appreciate any input or suggestions of what others have put on a similar motor.

Many say the original Q-jet is the best carb available.... others say it's junk....

Many have failed rebuilding this carb.... I'd have it rebuilt by somebody who knows what he's doing.

The Edelbrock or Holley carburetors are a inexpensive alternative ($250 at the local store). I bought the Edelbrock carb and I'm happy with it.

The q-jet is pretty much as good as they get all around for efficiency and such.

Have it rebuilt and brought back to spec and it'll run nice.

I think you need to be much more specific as far as thie "Little lever" goes
The secondarys will not open until the engine is up to temp

If your talking about trying to open them by hand there is a lockout that needs to be released

We need more info and pictures please

The performance of your car is based on cubic inches, compression, and cam timing. Even under brand new conditions the later C3s were no fireball. Unless you are willing to make internal modifications you will not appreciably increase the performance of your car. If you add an intake, new carb and headers you probably will only gain 20 to 30 horsepower at max rpm and while that may be nice to have its not going to be all that big of a difference. The ignition you have, when working properly, is all the engine needs so upgrading it will not make a difference. You may be able to tune the ignition curve to get a little extra power but if the system if firing as its supposed to there's not much you can do to improve it. Real horsepower increases would come with a change of pistons and new heads along with a greater duration camshaft to complement these changes. Your other alternative would be to pull the original engine and just buy the horsepower that would make you happy.

Im not so much interested in added horsepower as I am just wanting efficiency for what the motor is. I would be satisfied with good timing and a properly functioning carb. I guess if I want to go faster I wont buy a C3 next time.

If you want more horsepower and you have money burning a hole in your pocket you call Edelbrock.

Then you need to figure out if there is a problem with your carb

Without the secondaries functioning you will have a real slug on your hands

So, like I said we need more info on the carb
