Default Need ideas for my 81

My vette is got a turbo 350 with a 375 hp crate engine in it. i took it out today and got it to run 5.61 0-60 and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how to get it running around the 5 second mark or lower? I was thinking a supercharger but i dont know what intake, heads, cam to match it with and its a little expenisive for my budget right now since im 17 and still in highschool (which sucks lol) I was also curious of what would be a good tranny to throw in it with more gears then my turbo 350 that can hold. I found a bolt up 6 speed for it but i dont know how to run the clutch or how hard it would be. And just building up the engine would be another possibility but i dont know where to start. It currently is running a 800cfm holly, torquer 2 intake, about 10:1 compression i beleive (i want to stay on pump gas) i recently put headman headers and midamericas true dual exhaust kit on it with dynomax perfomance mufflers which sound very nice any suggestions would be apreciate greatly!! thanks on helping my make my first vette go faster!

hmmm, well i was gonna say get it stroked with an all forged bottom end but the motor in ur car is still pretty fresh. Im pretty sure it will take some modification to put that 6 speed in but it would be worth it. Other than that i guess Nitrous would be the cheapest and easiest way to go.

since you have 10:1 compression, there's no way you can run a supercharger, unless you either tear down the engine and put in lower compression pistons, or put on open-chamber heads to help drop the compression...

Ideally, for a blower, you'd want to run about 8-8.5:1 compression ratio, and run 8 or 6 pounds of boost (respectively). This is assuming you're running pump gas...

I'd agree, that you're limited to either nitrous, changing rear gears or switching to a switching to a better trans...

Best of all worlds, would be to install a 700R-4 transmission with a mild shift kit and a "Saturday Night Special" torque converter...

Several advantages with this approach:
1. You don't have to fight through the change-over to a manual transmission.
2. The 700R-4 has a deeper first gear, giving you a harder launch. This, combined with a higher-stall speed converter, will push the RPM up at launch, and you're biggest expense will be rear tires...
3. Lastly, and perhaps also the most attractive, is that you'll be able to enjoy an overdrive gear, that'll allow the car to be more economical to drive, for everyday use...

If you look in this direction, make sure you get a lock-up converter, to allow you the maximum mileage you can get...

While I'm not an "automatic" kinda' guy (with regards to performance cars), this WOULD give you all the things you want...

Let us know how it goes...

I've heard that the 700R4s had problems, well at least the first ones they made. Where should i look for one? What coverter should i look into and where could i get a good shift kit for it? And how much power would it be able to hold?

Thanks again,
Blake

Where can i find a mild shift kit and what kind or converter do you mean by satuday night special? could you give me a few brands to check out? I dont want a too high of converter since this is my everyday good weather driver and also could you explain to me what a K-case is and do i need it or not? Do you have any idea how much this would knock of my 5.6 sec 0- 60 time? Thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated

In my dads '75 we put a 700R4 and it was an improvement in almost anything you want to measure. It has a shift kit and shifts very quickly and smoothly.

Different transmission and rear gears would probably be your best bet. 2004R and 3.73s would probably serve you well or 700R4 and 3.36s.

Try Jegs.com. They've got a lot of stuff to look at, HERE. Better yet, give them a call, and they'll be able to steer you in the right direction. My experience with Jegs is that the salesmen are TRULY gearheads, while Summit salesmen tend to be more... salesmen. JMHO.

There are so many different ways to go (selection of proper trans, torque converter, gears, etc.) that we could easily fill up a lengthy thread... And there are as many different opinions on what is best, as there are mechanics... So, I'd recommend talking to the Jegs tech help, and deciding what you really want...

jegs catalog is good, but the smmit catalog has greater seletion. you,ll find the shift kits- i got the transgo, in my c3 and c4 and really like how they pop. the converters are from B&M and are also in the catalog. jegs and summit are in the business to sell stuff, and their salesman vary in experience. come to the Forum or your trusted mechanic for more advice. good luck! jim
