About a year ago i traded a motorcycle for a 77 vette. I recently finished the interior and took the car down the road. As I was turning around heading back home, i noticed a high pitched squealing noise coming from under the hood and noticed smoke coming from under the hood as well...I turned the engine off and poped the hood and noticed steam coming from under the carburator and the intake manifold. What does this problem sound like? Would a stuck thermostat exhibit this problem?
There could be a lot of things to look at. I know the squeeling can come from a carb that's not tight against the manifold.
As far as the steam, I have seen it come from under a carb where the flanges sometimes don't meet perfectly and the gasket is soft...but how was this steam coming from under the intake?
A bad stat would cause the engine to possibly overheat. How was the temp gauge when this problem occured?
Steam ??? Leak of coolant and the "squeal" may have been coolant getting on your belts...
Do this...check coolant level in AM or when engine is cold.....fill to correct level...start engine, watching intake, water pump as vette warms up.this may take twenty minutes or so....it is possible your water pump is leaking and your fan is blowing it up on your engine...that will cause "steam"...the leak from pumps is typically from bottom vent of pump or rear cover of pump...
