Default Distributor - Dual Point Mechanical Tach Drive

I have a stock GM distributor, dual point with mech tach drive.

My engine builder wants to send it out to a guy who converts them to electronic. I understand they would weld something to the shaft and it is unable to be returned to stock shape. I want to say he said $150 or for the conversion

Any comments on whether I should do this or not? Is the stock distributor hard to find and worth something...and/or would I be spinning my wheels?

If I was in your position, I would sell it on flea-Bay, and get a Mallory tach. drive unit . It will have the vacuum advance, and the electronics is self-contained.

I put in a new Mallory Electronic distributor, made the 350 run and start much better, no points to worry about, bought an electronic tacho off a 75, off this forum and plan to change my original tacho to an electronic one, that looks like the original. There is a thread somewhere that clearly outlines this

Don't trash the original. They are getting hard to find.

Get an Accel blueprinted hei on eBay for less than 75 bucks new and change to a elec tach as previously mentioned.

This combo is more than enough for your revs.

Thanks - OK - I will save the original. Any reason why Mallory over MSD? WIll search Ebay in a bit for the Accel model. The Mallory was $306 and this MSD is $340 http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294840120 Both I assume require the separate ignition box

I did not realize you could change the tach to electrical - will have to search the archives. That has to change teh configuration at the interior gauge then...any negatives to that?

The Mallory I listed is self-contained. The MSD unit will require a seperate box. Why switch to electric tach.? The mechanical tach. is in place and very reliable. The dual-point is not original to your 'Vette, but is probably from an early '60's Vette.

I went electronic tach because I did not like the mechanical tach drive on the distributor, electronic tacho is much smoother with no needle bounce.

This is thread I was talking about............

Basically you can get a 75-77 tach and install it in your dash. You can swap the face ovr from your 74, but it is pretty close.
