Can anyone tell me how you can tell if a converter is going bad??
I have a strong order of exahust I notice when the car is running when first started. It is very strong order.

Even if your cats are going bad you shouldn't smell exhuast. Maybe when you're sitting at idle at a light with the windows down, but otherwise you shouldn't smell anything with the windows up. If your exhuast is leaking then you should be able to hear it. Instead of a slight rumble it should be a little raspy and louder.
To answer your question though, the only way I know to check to see if a cat is bad is to take it out and see how big the chunks of rust are that are coming out of it. Maybe someone else can chime in, but when mine went bad I just took it off
I think it's pretty normal to smell exhuast when you first start your car and I thought we determined in your last thread that your hatch wasn't sealed all the way which would explain the exhuast smell regardless of the condition of your pipes.
