I did some searching on the forum here and a few posted about a stock mechanical fuel pump being enough for a high horsepower application. Will the stock small block fuel pump support 500hp? Somone also said carter makes a 3 port high performance series fuel pump, but I can't find the part online. I would like to use the fuel return line so the aftermarket mechanicals aren't really an option.
Carter "NASCAR" Race Fuel Pump M60969 - this is what I installed in my 500HP 383 Stroker, great pump, but no return line. I do not recommend the Edelbrock fancy looking pump, that's what I had at first and the fuel pressure was not stabilized, varied from 3-9 lb psi. This Carter pump does use the AN type fittings in lieu of the pipe threads so I had to shop for the fittings, but I am very pleased with it.
I want to use the return line because the general consensus seems to be it helps prevent vapor lock and boiling fuel in the carb after shutoff. I read a post where lars recommended a "T" at the carb connection with a small line going to the return where you can use the aftermarket style fuel pumps. I'd rather not have to do that and if the stock pump can support that much power I don't really see a reason to use another pump.
I am open to ideas however. I wanted to run a steel line from the pump up to the fuel hardline that came with the carb. I purchased the model that has a steel hardline and area for the gauge to mount to. This line has a push on type connection for the main fuel line (without threads) so I'll either have to modify that or change it out completely to one with threads.
