so this is a sequence of events exactly as happening...
we are still getting the clicking sound on occasion
so I turn the key and it has started clicking.
pull out the test light and check the starter by grounding it to the back and then touching to the case as suggested by sixfooter and recieved a bright light
then turned the key and the light dims slightly but not significantly and the engine fires off..(also shows battery is good according to sixfooter and by our meter)
so we lower the jack and set the car on all 4 wheels and try and start again. it does not fire but gives that annoying click that i have grown to hate...
putting the car back on the jack, it suddenly decides to fire off again.
OK
so i put the car BACK on all 4 wheels and it starts, starts, starts, starts and it has started about 20 times in a row...
and now here i am writing this post in bewilderment...
does anybody have any insites..thoughts or anythign about what might be causing this???
Guys
this is just wierd..took the new starter to auto zone - it checked bad..gave me another, had him check it before I left, it checked good...
Ok - put it on and ithe car started great, I started it, son started it, wife started it ---great... went out 20 minutes later and got the click/click thing again...is there a relay or resister or something else that I am missing? checked the battery with a test light like sixfooter suggested and passed the test! suggestions??
guys just to explain - bigjim13 is father and bigjim13 jr. is son - we keep yelling at eash other as to what is wrong and then go to the forum and ask questions, sometimes it appears that we have loged on as each other...just trying to solve a problem that is wierd

Have you looked carefully at the main ground cable from the motor to the frame? It is a Large wire connected to the engine on the starter frone brace bolt and to the motor mount from beneith. the connection on the cable to the terminal might be flakey. Take it off and examine it closely. Could be there somewhere, moves around when you jack it up. Its an electrical bug somewhere, obviously not the starter itself.
A battery can read 12+ volts on a meter and still be bad, It can also show a full charge when charging and still be bad. When put under load it fails to supply the amps necessary to start the car. Its a very common thing, especially these days with the new thin plate technology.
if it was running fine before then I would check this first, it has happened to me before, new batteries just don't like going flat and being recharged anymore, unlike the old batteries that would be happily recharged year after year.
I have done the whole spark/fire thing when I had starting problems (not on my vette) only to find it was a stupid battery on it's last legs.
sixfooter - so you maintain that there should be a heavy ground (battery cable size?) that goes from the block to a motor mount bolt?
Jim it goes from the right motor mount bolt to the small bolt at the top of the starter support bracket.
Also check where the neg. battery cable bolts to the frame--get a hold of it and wiggle it around where it connects.
