82 Gas Gauge Not Working

My gas gauge will not move past the quarter tank mark. Any suggestions on whwere to start troubleshooting. Thanks

Make sure the tank is more than a quarter tank. jk

Does the gauge go lower than that? If it does than unless the gauge itself is stuck... You might want to check the sending unit.

Sending unit.. Can test with an ohm meter. 0-90 ohms is the scale.

those rarely go bad. Sending unit is the first place I'd look

Maybe the tank liner is catching it. Take the sending unit out and test it. While it's out you can look at the liner in the tank.

Pull the sending unit. It is easy to do. You can pull it in about 15 min. disconnect the negative on the battery first. You wouldn't want a spark in that area. It could be as simple as a bad wiring connection. It is also possible that the float is hanging up on something. You may have some trash and debris in the tank after 25 years. I dont think it would be catching on the tank liner unless the tank was collapsed. While you have the sending unit out go ahead and repalce the fuel pump and strainer and I would go ahead and wipe the inside of the tank out with a sponge as well. If you cant figure out what is wrong with the gauge float, you can buy a new complete sending unit for aroun $240.00 American Corvette in Powder Springs GA has them cheaper than anyone else that I have found.
