Default Pilot Bushing/Input Shaft

My plastic clutch alignment tool goes in pretty easily into the pilot bushing but it is a little stubborn to get out though depending on how it is turned when inserted - sometimes easliy removed, sometimes not. Should it be totally "free" both in and out always or is some resistance Ok.
I want to make sure that my pilot bushing is in straight enough.
Also, should the input shaft of the tranny be lubricated? If so, how far down from the end and with what type of lubricant?

thanks Rob

Plastic alignment tools are not very good. A trans input shaft is the best way to go.

I broke my plastic alignment tool when using it to align the clutch. I had to use my tranny on a jack as an alignment tool. When I installed the tranny everything lined up and it slid right in. As far as lube, I would just make sure the input shaft was clean.

I would only be concerned of it was very loose - that could give you alignment issues whet putting the trans back in. Even at that, the worst thing you would have to do is have someone push the clutch pedal in to get the trans in the last 1/2 inch or so. It could also be vacuum holding it in when you try to get it out - a tight fit will cause that.

If the pilot bearing is in as far as it is supposed to be, then being "straight" is not an issue - it's either in or not and when in, there is enough contact [depth] to assure it is straight (assumption here is that is was machined correctly!).

I always put a VERY light coat of Mobil 1 grease on the pilot shaft - primarily to prevent binding in case the alignment tool was just a little off and to minimize friction the first few times the clutch is pushed in - once the shaft and bushing "get to know each other" things will just dandy!

Bottom line, don't dwell on it! Once the trans is bolted in, the alignment of the clutch during installation is moot.

Everything sounds fine.
