Hello everyone, got a small problem that I think may be a big problem.
73vt/454 w/4 speed pops out of forth every now and then.

Also have to hunt for the slot to get it into reverse.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Original shifter?
Could be a simple line up/rebuild or it could be an internal issue
We need details

As far as I can tell everything on this car is stock and original.

More details :

To shift into reverse, pulling up on the T-handle and moving the shifter to the reverse position it feels like there is an obstruction preventing it from slipping through what feels like a gap into reverse. Have to move the shifter back and forth to find the gap to move the shifter into reverse. On rare occasion move the forward or backwards helps.

Poping out of 4th:

During cruise with limited power applied to the drive train sometimes it just pops out of gear. During heavy or hard acceleration as you let of on the gas or sometimes during the accelerations it pops out of gear.

Bob, nice pix of ur 73 - hope to have mine like that some day.

Default Possibly a bad synchro...

I had one that if I rested my hand on the shifter all the time it was fine. You could feel it trying to pop out of gear on decelleration.

I rebuilt the trans and the synchronizers were pretty beat up.

Reverse could just be a linkage issue.

Syncros are going bad. For any decent trans guy an easy fix to rebuild a 4 speed.

Thanks guys, I was afraid it was the syncro's but want to get someone else's ideas. Looks like time to drop the trany and do a rebuild. Grrrr not my favorite thing I wanted to do.
