Default oh my gawd!

well took apart my center console and dash console yesterday to investigate a clicking noise in the dash area and battery drain issue.
after removing the panels what a nightmare as far as wiring goes.
ill probly have to redo all the wiring under the console and they even cut the fiber optic leads and put an electrical splice on em lol.
I might save time in getting a full interior wiring harness and do everything over the correct way.

Years ago, I was reading somewhere where they did splice fiber optics. I don't know if anyone repros these but try a search at either Corvette Fever magazine or Zip Products. I am pretty sure it was at one of those sites I saw the article.

It sounds like replacing the dash wiring harnes is the way to go. Good luck.

Takes lots of before and after photos.

You can get splice kits from any of the big vendors. Don't know how well they work but I did my senior project in college on splicing fiber optics - if done correctly it will be fine. My project involved signal loss through various splice techniques. Our system is just a light transfer system that doesn't carry data so it will probably be more forgiving than if the fiber is carrying data.

splicing fiberoptics of course can be done, think that sprint fiber cable from new york to LA is one piece? It requires a very clean cut, special glue and a special splice. I have no idea on the quality of the kits mentioned above

If I am not mistaken, the fiber optics are not part of the dash wiring harness. They are part of the rear harness and front harness.

I remember a post from years ago, someone used compression fittings to splice the FO cable. I will look and see if I can dig the thread out of the archives. Wish me luck.

I believe Corvette Magazine had a tech article a couple years ago about splicing fiber optics. Search their tech articles.

Correct, I replaced the harness on my 71' and the rear fiber optic was separte from the harness and the front FO is part of the forward lap harness. None were part of the main dash harness.

The fiber optics in a vette is really a pretty crude system. You can really just cut the stand carefully at right angles, but them together as best you can and tape them together.

i don't understand this thread..fiber optic in center console on a C3?...when i pulled my console there was a few lighting and window wires, other than that there was a gazillion wires with the alarm. it was so jammed in i thought the alarm was aftermarket and cut it all out and threw it away. All my wiring seemed standard wires in my '79. You've gotta be referring to an 80,81 or 82 .

ZIP has it $8.50. Fiber optics were in 68-71 and basically useless.

I used to splice fiber for a living,it takes a $30000 splicer to do it.But i'm sure that some where someone has spliced the fiber your speaking of.Maybe you can find replacement fiber from one of the vendors or post something in the sale forum.

Why do you say that? The purpose of the optics were to inform the driver of burned bulbs at a glance.

All it does is show if the various lights work. Seems like more of a gimmick.

When we built Cadillac's in the 70's they had fiber optics for the rear barke and tail lights, also the fronts. If they got damaged we would splice them. Just cut and use a piece of vacuum hose the diameter of the fiber optic and butt the to ends together. You are only transfering a light source. So next time you are in a bone yard look into the old Cads. The rear is the easy one you can start in the trunk. Then work your way into the rear garnish moulding. They were quite long.

Exactly. You don't need to do a walk-around to see if a bulb is out, and they get brighter to show you the brake/stop filament operation. Even the license lamp is monitored. Way ahead of it's time...just goes to show you that the Corvette got the innovative stuff first. BTW, unless something has changed, the aftermarket fiber-optic harnesses aren't nearly as bright. They have a smaller cable.

You are correct on the replacement cables, I spent the time and effort to replace the rear one (which was destroyed) and the new one was no where near as bright as the OE front one. Rather disappointing.
