When I first got my vette the stick shift would remain snug in nuetral while not in gear. After dirving it for about a year the shifter is loose. I moves freely back and forth while in nuetral( easy wiggle from left to right and right to left). When going through the gears it is snug.
It is a muncie 4 speed.
The clips on the shift levers are fine. What do I do to get the lever snug again?
Here's a bump for you. FYI - when I had my muncie, the shifter was always loose between 1st and 3rd. Reverse was spring loaded. I think this is the way most of them are.
Have you gotten underneath to see if everything's tight? The newly-installed competition plus on my muncie is very tight with none of the problems you describe- check the bolts holding the shifter onto its bracket and the bolts holding the bracket onto the frame (or bracket to trans if it's a Hurst unit). If all that's OK it sounds like the shifter's just a little worn.
I checked out everything I could reach from under the car. Is there an easy way to check the shifter bracket bolts...can't seam to get up there high enough.
Take the cover off the shifter assembly in the console and examine the shifter mechanism. There is a rod that goes through the whole upper assembly and the assembly is held together with an E-clip on the left side. It's hard to see it unless you use a mirror, but it could be that the E-clip is either bent or missing. My shifter was very loose - the whole upper assembly could move side-to-side. I found that the E-clip was bent and almost falling off. A new 25-cent clip from the hardware store tightened the assembly up nicely.
I agree - Smokin, I think you are trying to fix something that isn't broken...
the neutral position on muncies and BW's are sloppy due to the linkage design by nature. They often feel tight when new or have been left sitting for some while, but after a little regular use it gets loose, not abnormal and nothing to worry about.
Excessive movement in the assembly including while engaging gears means you have loose mountings and or linkage unions, but I don't think this applies to you from your description.
