Default 400 turbo flexplate?

I have a 168 tooth flexplate from my turbo 350, which I used in my turbo 400. I was under the assumption that it was pretty much universal. When bolting up my engine, I had problems getting the flexplate to turn. It was pressing against the side of the transmission. eventualy I got it free enough to turn, but there is little clearance on either side. Does this sound right, or does the 400 turbo only take the smaller flexplate?

not sure about parts compatibility on this, but i'm wondering... does your starter gear line up? I've seen flexplates rub when they're installed backwards. if your starter gear doesn't line up, time to flip 'er.

Are you CERTAIN the convertor is fully-seated into front pump?

Yes, the flexplate and converter are free spinning now that I readjusted the transmission and engine. They were in a bind because of their positioning while I tightened the engine. But my question is why is there not more clearance. Is it because the flexplate is different from the original?

Thats a good point. I ran this engine with the same flexplate in a 55 chevy, and when I reassembled it... it was obvious which way to bolt it up because of the worn areas made by the bolts and crankshaft. I havent turned the engine over with the starter yet, but I'll check before I do just to be sure. Thanks.
