I would like opinions on brands and the best price of headers for a '74 SB. My engine is a 350 bored .30 over. Mild cam, dual plane manifold, Edlebrock carb. I am replacing heads with S/R Torquer. I want to keep low end torque.
IMHO Hooker headers are the best quality and fit for any vehicle. Have been for many years. I would discourage using price as the main determinant of your selection. In most cases, you get what you pay for.
Frankly, it's mostly a matter of opinion. A lot of people like the Dynomax Jet Hot coated headers because they are only $209 but then others will tell you to stick with Hooker. (Edit: mdsmith, I was typing my post when you posted yours, purely coincidence, no hard feelings) From what I've read (quite a bit since I'll be putting headers on my 79) the Dynomax are a great header for the stock (or close to it) small block. It really depends on your engine, HP, torque, etc. Larger primaries will help flow more at the higher RPMs putting your torque horsepower peaks in the higher RPMs. Smaller primaries are just the opposite and help put the torque down low for use off the line. Whatever header you choose, check with the manufacturer on what they recommend for your specific engine and needs. Too large of a primary on a low torque/HP engine and you've wasted money because the torque isn't where you need it. I'm going with the Dynomax with 1 5/8 primaries but I don't have any major mods to my engine and those would be the best headers for me (in my opinion).
Hey, finally get to share something, been there, done that...
did lotsa lotsa research and went with the Dynomax ceramic headers from Jegs for $198 (yeah, last summer) into 2.5 exhaust, no cats, out the back into tips... was way tooo loud, put some tiny glass packs just in front of the tips (6 inch?)... perfect throaty, no crackle, the muffler guy was right...
anywhoooo, these headers went on in a breeze, no a/c... cool to the touch in minutes, and look awesome after 6,000 miles, like the day I got them.. Im sure they lowered my cockpit temp some also.. I know I picked up low end and top end is still limited by rpms maxing out.... pulls like a some b*tch...
best two bills I spent yet...
best of luck,
krafty
I also appreciate the advice. Just curious - how much ground clearance did you end up with? I read about many Hooker owners who had to remove them because of clearance problems.
Steve if I caught you before you order get the super comps for angle plug heads. Ceramic headers out here are nearly a lifetime investment. I ran straight plug heads with mine and it seemed to me that I only had one plug that was a must get to, from the bottom. I knew angle plugs heads are the way to go and it's much nicer once you upgrade.
I have Hooker SCs on my BB and recommend you buy them direct from Jethot instead. They get them uncoated direct from Hooker and ship them to your door and their coating is worth it. I'm in NC and mine were on the car when I bought it and are already rusting and I've heard others complain about Hooker's ceramic coating not lasting! Just my .02! :seeya
