Tinkling sound.
Recently (last 2 months) I've been hearing a tinkling sound. Not sure exactly where it's coming from. Definetly from the front of the vehicle, maybe the engine?? Very faint, really have to listen closely to hear it.
I can usually hear it when I let off the accelerator. It lasts 5-8 seconds and then nothing. It's driving me nuts. My wife can't hear anything. Under acceleration and idle you hear nothing. Any ideas?
Youdidnt mention if it was a auto or 4 speed. but....I had a similiar noise. It was due to the small 7/16" head bolts that hold the bell housing splash shield on my M-22. They had all worked loose, and the only thing left holding it on was the starter. The edge of the sheild would rub against the flywheel, and sounded like a little tinklingitself loose, and
will it only happen when driving or can you replicate the sound by revving the motor than letting off the gas while the car sits in the garage?
Obviously if you can replicate the sound while the car is in the garage it will be much easier to locate the cause......
I may be offbase here but i'd start looking first at items that would normally be under tension while cruising or accelerating than off tension or at least under reduced tension when you let off the gas such as maybe the waterpump, AC, idler, power steering pulleys. When driving and the motor is at higher rpms these are under more tension from centrifigal force and when letting off the gas the centrifigal forces lessen so if a pulling is loose it may cause a rattling or tinking noise. It very well may not be a loose pully but I used this as an example of something that MIGHT cause a noise when letting off the gas.
Do you have AC? mine compressor rattles sometimes at idle but never when actually driving.
Obviously could be as simple as a loosened bolt somewhere.....
could be anything so if you can recreate the sound in your garage it would much easier to track down

It's a 4speed. Are you talking about the clutch-flywheel inspection cover? Different names for the same thing I think. Anyway, I don't have one.
As Melvin said the inspection shield would be a good place to start.I've also run into the alternator fan making noise.I noticed from your pics a fuel pressure regulator(2 diff. ones)-could it be compensating when it doesnt need as much fuel.If you have a manual switch for pump try switching off well before backing out of throttle.Have you checked your throttle blades to make sure their not getting loose on shaft. If they were they would flutter. One other idea is that given a big vacumn increase when closing throttle do you think you could have one of your vacumn diaphrams in the engine area fluttering.Like the wiper door, headlamp actuators etc. Also I have heard the diaphrams in the heater, defroster and or recirc.door.Sometimes noises in these can be caused by the 3 port Trico check valve or a small leak in the vac. system.

Thanks, great ideas there. I'm just glad no one thinks it's the valves.
What you probably see in the pics is probably two fuel pressure gauges. I have two because I didn't have a spacer to connect the fuel line to the carb fiel line. I had an extra pressure gauge and it was the correct size.
Your right I was seeing 2 diff. gauges and fuel inlet manifolds. If you dont have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator that idea wont fly.If one of the heater mode doors is not being held firmly due to a small leak it will make a noise when it recieves full vacumn when you back off pedal.First thing I would check for safety reasons are the throttle plates,If your engine swallows one it could make for a bad day.The pics are on your homepage.
I know you stated that you did some exhaust work and you don't hear it at idle or excelleraton.
I used to have a tinkling sound when I let off the gas on my previous SB/mt with hooker sides. It was an exhaust leak from the collector to the side pipe. Sounded a like some very small wire brads (picture hanging nails) in a coffee can were being shaken or spun around. It was very faint at first but got louder over time.
BTW, just checked out your website...great job! Signed your guestbook.
