Default L-48 to ZZ4 Migration

Ever since I installed the TKO I knew I wanted more horses up front.

I have now officially started the removal of the original engine. I have taken a small video of it running for the last time. Just in case the next owner wants to hear it running I will have that record.

I also installed one of the new ceramic silver ZZ4 block-hugger headers from Patriot just to see how they fit and to determine what alterations I have to make to my side pipes. I believe all I have to do is cut 3" from the pipes and reflange them.

I installed the new flywheel from Keisler and checked the runout. It is about as close to perfect as you could get with less than .0015 runout.

Here are a couple of pics and a link to the video.

Sweet! L48 to the ZZ4...going to be a big difference! Where did you buy the motor and what are the internal specs?

The video sounds good and whilst a bit grainy, the engine is looking nice. Has it been rebuilt?

I purchased the engine from Seaside Chevrolet in New Brunswick, Canada. It is the standard GM ZZ4 engine with the following specs.

Horsepower : 355 hp @ 5,250 rpm
Torque : 405 ft/lbs @ 3500 rpm
Compression Ratio : 10.0 to 1
Block : Cast Iron 4-Bolt Main, 4.000" Bore
Crankshaft : Forged Steel, 3.480" Stroke
Heads, Chamber Size : Aluminum, 58cc Chamber
Valves (I/E) : 1.940"/1.500"
Camshaft, Lift (I/E) : Hydraulic Roller, 0.474"/0.510"
Camshaft Duration @ 0.050" I/E : 208/221 degrees
Intake Manifold : Aluminum Dual Plane

I will be using the 650 Speed Demon with mechanical secondaries and electric choke (the one designed for the ZZ4 engine)

The car still has the original L-48 numbers matching engine and runs as strong as it ever did. The engine has never been rebuilt and still has all the original California Smog equipment.

Binnie, I was thinking about your stock pipes and the connection to the headers. With the side exhaust mufflers, there is very little room for error under the covers.
If you think getting the new flange at the correct height and angle might be difficult, maybe you could cut the existing exhaust pipe/flange off the pipe, bolt it to the header, then modify the exhaust pipe/muffler to fit up to the cut.
Then it would need to be welded together, however it might be easier to ensure a good fit. Just a thought.

If you have a 240V plug, I could bring my welder if you wanted to go that route.

The headers look great. Coated headers are the only way to go.

ZZ4...Good Choice. You should like it a lot. Pretty much doubles the horsepower of the L48. Enjoy!

My new Speed Demon came today. This evening I decided to build a bracket for my accelerator and cruise cables. I also fabricated some linkage studs for the throttle shaft. After some careful measurements I discovered that I could use part of my old QuadJet bracket. I had a spare one anyway so I decided to start hacking at it. I have attached a pic of the finished product. I believe there will be plenty of travel in the cables. If not I will just drive the car at an idle :-)
