I just rebuilt the top end, stock parts just replacing a blown headgasket.
It turns over speratically..medium/fast then kinda slow likes its struggling to turn over. New optima redtop and the starter is fairly new. It almost turns over enough where it should fire. I set the lash via Lars tech paper. The engine wasnt hard to turn over manually. So it comes down to the timing, but it doesnt make sence that it would turn over so odd if the timing was off.. or dose it?
I'd almost be willing to bet you dropped your distributor 180 degrees out. A second thing to check (assuming your lifters were as old and tired as the rest of the motor was before you took it apart) is the spring tension on your lifters- if they're weak it'll make it real difficult (especially for a novice) to get a good valve adjustment- you might have over-tightened them. Good luck.
For sure are you getting spark? If it were 180 out it would probably be backfiring thru the carb also if the timing is too far out it will sometimes backfire thru the carb and for sure when the timing is off it will crank like it is struggling. First thing confirm spark to the plugs.
