Default Rust Removal Help Needed

I would like to take off the surface rust on my exhaust tips after the muffler. Any ideas on how to do this without buying an entire exhaust system? Dremel drill?

Thank you

You can use a Dremmel with a wire brush wheel, but be advised, you will probably remove the chrome....did this on a used luggage rack and lost some chrome, not much, but it may happen....if you want flawless chrome tips, buy new and replace the rusters...try eBay

If you only have small rust pits, you can temporarily remove the rust stains with paste type rubbing or polishing compound available at you auto parts store. But once rust starts on chrome parts you can't stop it, you just keep polishing them. If it's not a judged car, you could replace the chrome tips with stainless reproductions and eliminate the rust problem for good.

I don't think they were ever chrome, but I could be wrong. A cleaned aluminum or metal surface is all I want. I'm not into the chrome look.

They were chrome. If you want a slow, non-corrosive method, try molassis.

I've had good luck with Autosol. It's a mild abrasive paste/polish that will remove the rust and leave a nice shine. As others have mentioned, once it starts, this then becomes part of your cleaning routine.

Good Luck

How does it remove the rust? Is it a chemical reaction?

For surface rust I had success with WD40 and some steal wool... do by hand.

Then chrome polish afterwards.

Autosol is a polishing compond that has a grit to it. The rust removal is proportional to the amount of elbow grease applied.

I was able to get the rust off my chrome bumpers with coke and a ball of aluminum foil. It worked great, but was messy.

Fine (soft) steel wool and elbow grease...that steel wool does wonders on chrome, aluminum, even unpainted fiberglass.

Default Chrome polish

Try Wenol, it is a German product that works quite well removing light rust on chrome.

ALL good ideas. You need to use some sort of Brass/Metal cleaner/polish. I use Brasso for my uniform brass and chrome items.

I was just made aware of a product called safestrustremover and was blown away by the results posted on their site

http://www.safestrustremover.com/

The guys over at Yenko.net were saying good things about it so I asked for the website.

I'd use some Naval Jelly ... dissolves the rust and helps form a
protective coating in the areas already rusting. The rust will
eventually come back ... but very slowly.

Default success

I got some naval jelly (rust removal) from NAPA and it is working but very slowly with a lot of elbow grease using steel wool and sand paper.

Thank you to all for the suggestions.....it looks much better than it did.

I let the naval jelly sit and eat the rust for some time ...
then go back and scrub off the converted rust (is black).
Rinse ... repeat.
