My horns do not sound loud enough and I have decided to buy a repair kit and try to bring them back to life. Anyone out there have had any experience doing this?
I haven't rebuilt my horns, so I can't help there. I know there is an in-depth write-up on Zip's website. It looks to be easy enough though.
My original horns are shot, one won't work at all and the other barely makes a squeak. I realized the other day that it's pretty unsafe not to have a working horn. A car was pulling out into an intersection and must not have seen me, and I had no effective means to warn them! What I did was order two Fiamm horns from Harbor Freight. They are on sale for $9.99 each. I ordered a low and a high note. These babies put out 132 dB a piece. They don't look significantly different than the stock horns, they are a similar spiral shape and will wire up to the existing wiring with little trouble. I've kept the original horns just in case the car ever becomes a trailer queen. Being that a rebuild kit for both horns is $35, I personally think this is a better option for a driver.
C3s are notorious for horn problems, more so than any other car I can think of. If at least one of your horns are blowing, all of your circuitry is good (power, ground, relay, upper and lower contacts, etc.)
If weak sound is the problem, replacing the horns may be the fix. There are two horns of different notes or pitch, one high, one low. The notes differed from year to year so you'll want to find the correct one(s). Some aftermarket vendors have them as will a GM dealer.
