In 82 Corvettes the only transmission available was the then all-new 700R4. 84-91 Corvette also had it as an option. 92-93 is called a 4L60 but is basically the same transmission with a 5-pin connector instead of 4. 94-96 got a 4L60E which is an electronic version, but shares many parts with the 700R4/4L60. 88 up are stronger and are the ones to get.
The 200R4 was never available in a Corvette, behind a big-block, or in a truck. It is a good transmission WITH MODIFICATIONS and rebuild. It is the transmission of choice for Buick GNs. It is not strong in stock form. It is shorter than a 700R4 and thus is almost a bolt in swap for a TH350 or 4-speed.
There are many posts and many opinions on which is better. Do a search.
Thanks, My 81 had a 287 rear I believe so the 700R4 would be better
with this low ratio. Is the tunnel the same on a 81 82, if so I could set
it up like a 82. I read of a company that sells all this stuff but cannot
remember the name.
I have posted many times here on this topic, and I think the 700 I installed some 8 years ago in my '72 here was a mistake....336 rear...and the first gear is/was allways useless as the shift happened in 2 seconds or less....the useless 3/4 clutch pack is another failure item with about 6 'fixes' posted on all sorts of places, and yet it still fails....I was not putting in the 4th clutch pack, I even had the parts...said screw it, I"m doing my own rebuild with a Trans Go shift kit, and hell with the 700 IMO, being some 50 lbs lighter, the 200 4r is the way to go....I had to widen my tranny tunnel some 2 inches on the pass side to clear that band apply valve, and pan....not worth the hassle....
SO, I guess this latest escapade willl tell the tale, IF I got that 200 4r rebuilt right, I no expert on these, but followed directions and asked questions....

PM PeteK in the C4 section for Q's on anything/everything relating to auto trannies in Corvettes.
I have a 700r4 in my 79 (previous owner installed it) and it hauls A$$ off the line with stock gearing (3.55) and almost no other mods.
