Default Fuse Link?

Does anyone know at what amperage a 12ga fuse link is designed to blow??

It would have to be in excess of 20 amps. There are quit a few variables when it pertains to fusible links; ambient temperature, duration of the overload, and how many times the link has been exposed to an overcurrent condition. Are you having a specific problem with one?

A piece of 12ga wire is rated good up to 41 amps, so I'd say about 30 amps is where it would blow... and I base this on pretty much nothing.

I know someone on here replaced theirs with circuit breakers, and I replaced one of mine with a 30A fuse and all is working well. The only time these really blow is when something is shorted, so as long as the link/fuse/breaker is more than the normal max load and less than the failure rate of the wire itself, it should be good to go.

I need 2 12 ga fusible links, the local new style auto parts places only go to 14 ga. I guess it's a dealer item.
Apparantly the oems are slowly switching to to a "fuse element cartridge" or "Pacific fuse" which are like a fusible link and don't deteriorate over time like a regular fuse or "maxifuse" will.

The best specs I can find on a fusible link is that it is rated for a wire "4 times it's own size" but I can't find a amperage conversion. The Pacific fuses are rated in amps.

The circuit I'm protecting is 8 awg, so I guess I could go with the max that gauge will handle.

What do ya think?

There is a little table on that page that might be useful

LOL
Just found that page while you were posting.

Down lower on that page it has a chart under "Upgrading the Link"

I've got the same condition except mine is a 130 amp alternator fused by 2 12 ga fusible links parallel, but my wire is #4 not #8 as in their chart.

So I guess being underfused is always safer.
