Default Headlight Switch removal

I'm trying to take out my headlight switch on my 81, I have the weird nut out, but I can't get the **** off of the shaft so I can pull it through the hole, what do I need to do here?

There is a small button on the top of the switch body itself. It's a little spring-loaded thing. Press it down and hold, then pill the **** and shaft out.

That's correct. Depress the small, spring loaded button the the switch itself (you need to be able to reach the back side of the switch to feel it). As a note, you need to have the push-pull shaft completely pushed in, press the release button, then pull the shaft all the way out. If you pull the shaft out until it stops, then press the button, the shaft won't come out.

I actually got my switch out with no problem, then put the shaft back in to see how the button holds it in. Spent the next half-hour trying to get the shaft out, until I figured out to leave the shaft fully "in", press the button, then pull the shaft all the way out.

Good Luck.

Did this on my 82. That's not the hard part. The hard part is getting the dumb switch out from under the dash :mad

just drop the column a little bit, unscrew the upperdash completely, and raise it up an inch or two, then push down on the lower dash a little(not to hard, you'll break it)...and you should have a good 6 inches to work with(as if thats a lot) :yesnod:

Ben,

Agree that getting to the headlight switch is a real PITA. I ended up dropping the steering column, removing the instrument cluster, then changing both the wiper and headlight switch. Pretty easy with everything removed. Also gave me the chance to replace all the instrument cluster bulbs, and lube the speedometer cable. All in all, it wasn't that difficult. I'll just echo the "be gentle" with the dash/instrument cluster. Old plastic breaks easy!!
