Default Question about Interior Dash Dye (pics)

I have an 80 and just about finished replacing or refurbishing the interior parts. The only thing left is the dash which is in excellent condition so there is no need to replace it. the dash is currently red with a black top and I want to dye it completely black. The problem is the black is a film of some sort that is over the red dye of the dash and I scrapped up the black film when removing it. I want to remove the black film before I dye it so I have a nice even black dye job over the entire dash. Are there any chemicals that I can use that take the black off and will not hurt the dash?

Unless I miss my guess, your "black" top was originally red and has been dyed black. The film you're peeling off is dried black dye. If you want to strip the pad, you will want to use something which will not harm the vinyl.

I wonder if I dye both the black and red sections it will be evenly shaded. I am scared to try because if I screw it up a new dash is $500.

You can always put more than 1 coat on if they don't match. Frankly, I wouldn't worry about that. Good luck.

My advice is to skip AutoZone or any of the generics and get your goodies from a retail automotive paint supplier. You want SEM automative interior dye. Take a sample of your interior with you and the dealer ought to be able to do a perfect color match and mix a quart for you. This stuff is/was a thin lacquer formulated for plastic and vinyl automotive trim.

You can shoot it yourself. Apply a thin, wet coat. About the only thing it won't cover well is carpet. No sense trying to redye carpet. The results will be disappointing.

The factory black on top is a special rubber finish used to cut the sun's glare.

If you take the black off, don't replace it with a glossy finish...this can be very dangerous.

Try using rubbing alcohol...test a small area 1st. This should remove the black without damaging your dash.

Don't screw-up your dash...the reproduction dash is JUNK...IMO.

The black "rubberized" finish is stock. Even if you do all black, leave the upper pad a flat black. It will lokk cool.

My dash was blue with the flat black top and I changed it to all charcoal and it came out great! I cleaned everything with alcohol. Use many very light coats. Good luck with it.

Did you remove the black top before dyeing it or did you dye over it?

Thanks Ric's80 I picked up some rubbing alcohol today and it worked great. It takes alot of rubbing to get the black off but it doesn't hurt the vinyl at all.
Thanks Again!
