Default AC Delco Battry Info 1978

I have to replace the battery in my 78 Pace car - Right now there is an Ac Delco professional 70-5yr in the car. What is the correct battery that is supposed to be in there??? Obviously I'm sure the original number is not available, but I'm sure that there is a replacement number that is for this car.. The Ac Delco rep sold me a 70-6yr which has more CCAs than the 5yr (about a 100) and the Ac Delco web site says 74-6yr. Any help is appreciated.

I don't know if you are looking for a Delco or not. In any event, a series 75
or a series 78 will fit fine, with the latter being physically larger. I have a '76 and am using the 75. You can get various cold cranking amps (cca's) and I suppect the original battery was around 500 cca's. Hope this helps.

Almost forgot. There is another nice option battery for you to consider and is actually what I have. It's a series 75/35 which has both side and top terminals. You use the side posts for your normal cable hook up and then the top ones for jumping and charging from a battery charger. As you probably know, trying to hook up jumpers to GM side post bateries is one PITA. You can get these batteries from Advance Auto Parts. They are made by Johnson Controls who makes a lot of original equipment batteries including Motorcraft which go in new Ford products.

Be sure and get the right battery for the engine. I have a 78 L-82 and the previous owner had replaced th battery with one for the L-48. The L-48 battery has significantly fewer CCA and the difference in cranking speed with the correct CCA on the L-82 was stunning.
