Dyno'd the 72 on Sat. 250 rear wheel hp. Not exactly what I am looking for, but the last year has just been restoring the car to it's current state. Engine is next. Edelbrock alum. heads, Holley 750. Not sure what type of cam or pistons (or compression). The block was already put together when I purchased the body and block together.
Visited with the Performance shop. gave me 3 options. All costing around 3k.
1. Supercharger
2. Milling heads and replacing cam
3. 383 stroker kit.
Not even a question for me, 383 all the way. They quoted a little over 3k to do the job. What have you paid?

ChanceWnds ck a thread I started. There are a couple of threads going on in the C3 Tech section. Do a search too...tons of info avaialabe here. I am going through the same thing on my 72. I have less than 200 RW HP....best od luck Mark
That was the first thread I went through. I assume 3k plus for someone to pull the engine, replace pistons, cam etc. and reinstall the engine is probably not a bad price. I would like a couple of quotes.
I recently spent $3500 for a short block 383 conversion/rebuild (I supplied the block). Included pistons, rods, crank, oil pump, harmonic balancer, cam, roller lifters, bearings, and all machine work (decking, honing, etc.) and external balancing.

Depends on the stroker kit they are installing. The engine build could range from a low of about $1500 to$7000 and up. The components vary drastically in price and quality. You can get a 383 stroker kit for $600. You can buy a 383 stroker crankshaft for $4000. Cheapest bid is not the best in this case. What are your goals? What are your uses? What trans do you have? What rear end and ratio? Do you want 350 HP or 550 HP? Streetable, dependable HP costs money and takes careful planning. If you go with a lot more HP you need to upgrade your entire drivetrain from cooling system to rear spindles. Give us more information and you will get lots of help here!
Thanks for the quick replies, as I need them. Try to give as much info as possible, but not being an experienced gear head, I am a little slow when it comes to dimmensions.
Let's start with my goal. Streetable, 360 rear wheel hp minimum., able to take 200 mile trips without taking a beating.
3 speed auto, Turbo 400? Do not know rear gears.
Should not have to replace fuel pump, heads or carb. I have to pic the vette up from the shop tomorrow "just tuned" and will try to get more info for you.

The rear end ratio have a lot to do with your cam selection. With a stock convertor you will be limited on duration also. A lower geared rear end will let you use more cam duration. What CC chamber and port size heads are they? Your expectations are not to high as to require a lot of driveline changes.
$3,000 isn't too bad if they are also doing the installation for you. I would definitely ask to see a list of the parts that they use so that you know you are getting quality items.
I am building my own 383 and I will probably come in between $2,000 and $2,500, and that is with taking time to search for good deals, rather than blowing my whole budget going and buying off the shelf items.
You want a solid engine? Buy a ZZ383/425. Warranty & everything. Look, I'm quite a bit above the ZZ price on my 396 & wonder if I wouldn't have been better off with the ZZ, but it's too late now. I think the ZZ is about $4800 & you'll need a carb & intake. It's a solid, no nonsense way to go. I'll agree with the guys that say $3k is light, where's the alum heads, etc. You pay cheap money you get cheap parts.
i had my stroker re done in dec past,, got a woppin 500 miles on her now,, i bought 64 cc heads and a new intake..the shop pulled the motor rebuilt and reinstalled.. all tog i spent 6 k,,,,they dynoed it at 431 hp/ 532 torque and delivered it from burlington wisc to my house 35 miles west of chicago, power built racing engines,,my builder used to build for the late dale earnheart, my 383 was his last build before retiring------------------------------
