for those who have classic auto air did any of you have trouble with the short cable that moves the door so that it will activate the defrost. The cable when on the controls if its in the a/c position it has the door on the defrost position. When my controls is in the defrost position then the door is in the a/c position.

I had a problem with the clamps holding the cable. Got the whoel thing installed and found those clamps just didn't hold the cable OD and loosened up. I ended up making a clamp like the one on the water shut off valve. I've had some other issues with this kit as well, not really the "bolt on" jop as stated.

How happy are you w/that setup? Did you install it or did it come w/your car? I'm think about adding it to my vette for those stuck in traffic hot summer days. How much does the system cost and who is the best vendor? Thanks

I agree. I am installing this kit in my car now. I thought it would be a lot better for the 1200 bucks this system cost. If i can get the door in the unit to open and close with the controls in the correct setting. The system will be done. Also the pipes have to be bent a little but in the processe of doing that becarfule the suction pipe likes to strip out and you can not attach it back on the unit. So I am not that impressed with the Classic Auto Air unit.

Has anyone tried Hot Rod Air's setup? Prices and pics would help, I am looking at redoing my a/c this winter.

I'm going to add AC back to my 76. I have researched Classic Auto Air, Hot Rod Air and Vintage Air. For my money i'm going / Vintage, they are all close on price. Vintage, as far as I know was one of, if not the first one to provide these systems for vettes (Hot Rod Air came from Vintage Air). Their system does not use cables OR vacuum to operate doors, etc., it's all electronic.

Im not trying to be an a hole but please do not hijack my thread about other a/c systems. I need help with my problem and do not want to read about other a/c systems. If you want to research them do a search. I need help with mine which is gettin the cable to operate the door correctly . The cable when on the controls if its in the a/c position it has the door on the defrost position. When my controls is in the defrost position then the door is in the a/c position.

Sorry for the hijack, just seemed that you were not the first to have a problem with this "bolt on system" and was wondering if there was an alternative. Is it possible that they sent you a control panel for a different model.

I agree 100% for the money I spent I am pretty dissapointed in what I got, I wish I had gone with an electronic set-up and they should pre-mount the system to the firewall plate and make it bolt-in from the passenger side of the firewall instead of the "erector set" parts they ship. None of my AC or heater tubes lined up well or looked good when mounting the unit as delivered. I am also not too happy with any of the system or instructions. I havent even gotten to the cheesy control cable phase of the installation yet and I am pretty good with mechanical parts. Keep us slow installers informed, Thanks, Eric B.

Try adjusting the cable by screwing the black thing in the middle of the cable (this will lengthen or shorten the cable), try adjusting the amount of slack you left on the end of the cable where it meets the control, and finally, you might want to pay close attention to where your control is set at the exact time you installed the cable onto it. I got mine to function just right by doing this. Hope this helps....

Edit: I don't remember if the short cable had the black screw thing on it, if it did not, then disregard my first suggestion and see the last two suggestions.

Yes, I finished my install... everything works great, I am pleased with the results of the unit (very cold air), however I was displeased with the fitment and lack of instructions in the kit.

Not a problem. I figured it out they put the handel that the short cable goes on to on up sidedown. I took it off and changed it now the cable functions like it supposed to. My controls came from ecklers. This unit does not come with the factory style controls it just reuses them.
