Default Transmission Tunnel Insulation

How important is it to have the insulation in place? I took a look under my 73 and noticed that the old insulation it was lying on top of the trans in two rough pieces. Is this more to prevent heat from entering the cabin, or to protect the fiberglass body? Going to order a new one, but wanted to find out if its ok to drive till then. Thanks in advance.

Replace it. It is used to keep heat out of the interior. Often overlooked piece. They cost about $20.00 via vendors, but they are very effective.

More like $35 & up now-a-days. It is a one piece molded unit, so to get it installed in one piece you have to drop the tranny. I suppose you could try & piece it in... then tape the seam with metal insulating tape.

There is also a semi circle looking foam collar that fits between the top of the bellhousing (of either a stick or auto car) and the transmissin tunnel. Acks like a gasket to keep the hot air out of the tunnel. Costs about $20 and it helps. Best of luck

For the undercar transmission tunnel I used "zero clearance, cool and quiet". (www.coolandquiet.com) Geat product. It is much better than the OEM or vendor replacement item. I did not drop transmission to install. Measured, cut and then slipped/rotated into place. It has adhesive backing. I also used it on the two lower forward metal heat shields on firewall.

I also installed the OEM foam collar on the bellhousing as mentioned above. It is needed to keep heat out of cabin from engine compartment. All the vendors carry it.

I agree that it is cheap to replace and rather easy. I have to say that I took mine out and was going to replace it, but I noticed no different in interior temp, so I didn't bother.

I'm sure its all right, especially since engineers who know way more about cars than I do designed the Corvette to have this piece of insulation, but what about keeping the transmission cool? Wouldn't having this piece of insulation make it harder for the transmission to stay cool?

Granted it would obviously keep the interior of the car cooler, but from a purely performance standpoint wouldn't you be better off without the insulation?

By the way, I don't have it in my car.

I be ordering some isulation. Currently I actually welcome the heat since its getting cooler out ide and I have the heater core bypassed until I find time to replace it. (leaking) I just wanted to make sure there would be no damage to the fiberglass. Thanks guys.

Default replace it

I installed both the collar and the tunnel insulation this year and the interior has never been more comfortable. Cheap fix, great results! BTW, I suspect mine was removed 30 years ago and all of the original clips for the trans tunnel were still in place.
