The gear inside the head is worn out. You will have to remove it and send it to a speedometer repair shop. You will have to specify that they use a metal gear or you will have the same problem very shortly. O,r if the plastic gears are used, remove the trip part, then it might last.
I've seen a few Corvette parts suppliers carry odometer gears in both plastic and metal. I was hoping I might be able to repair it myself. I'll have to look at it when I get it out.
Its possible that you can replace the gear and it still be calibrated, especially if you stay with what is in it now. But I have noticed in the past that if you replace it with a different material, for some reason it changes the calibration.
Getting the pointer off without breaking the small shaft running up to it is nearly impossible. I broke mine trying, so I don't know if I will be able to fix that or not, because I don't know if anyone sells that part. DocRebuild.com has the worm gears. 1-800-8669-DOC or 203-366-1332.
I would recommend getting an estimate from someone like Corvette Clocks by Roger 901-664-6120 or 800-752-3421 for orders.
Thanks for the advice carnutbob. I know I've seen needles for sale so you shouldn't have any trouble getting one.
I'm kinda thinking maybe it's best to buy a working speedo in good condition and swap them. Then I can sell mine as is to offset the cost to some degree.
I'm surprised that no one offers a rebuild service with a core charge so you can order the replacement, install it and return yours to get your core charge back.
You don't need to remove the needle to replace the two gears. Try Corvettefaq.com. I believe there is an article there showing how to replace the gears. If not email me. Many years ago there was a post here telling and showing how to replace the gears, I believe it ended up at Corvettefaq.
I replaced both gears two years ago. Easy once out of the dash, it will only take an hours or so to replace the gears.
I got plastic gears from Dr. Rebuild.

RMS73, I found the article. Sound like a very doable project. Guess if I'm going to the trouble of replacing the speedo, I may as well try to fix it instead.
Thank you for pointing me to the article.
While I was there, I found one on adding wider tores to a C3 that was very informative also. I'm going with 255x60s instead of 225x70s.
