I was thinking about running two sets of exhaust on my 78. One for the side pipes and a 2nd system running out the back end (less ear ringing) for times where less noise is less expensive in the "Fix-it ticket" department. I have seen cable operated cut-outs in places like JC Whitney.

Has anyone ever done this before?
Thanks
We put under car exhaust on this 66 and left the side pipe covers on because we like the look. You could do that also. I don't see the benefit of two systems. A lot of pipes under a car w/little room. Why not put in a 2.5 or 3 inch performance exhaust system w/flowmaster mufflers. If you want no mufflers for racing put in the cut-outs. .02
IIRC, this is an old hot rod trick. You have an under car exhaust with a "Y" duct that is capped off with a removable panel. Get to where you are racing and remove the small panel, giving a straight shot to the unmuffled exhaust, which exits out the side of the car. I have read about it and I have also seen a couple examples at cruises. Usually on very old Fords and Chevys. Maybe someone who knows what that is called will pipe in.
I'm an old Pontiac guy and in 1970 you could order Vacuum Operated Exhaust on a GTO. An under dash control operated a vacuum actuator on each muffler moving the internal baffles back and forth to change the sound level. I remember these from working at the dealer and they were pretty cool. One major problem though, corrosion set in and froze everything up especially during winter. There is a guy reproducing these now. I attached a web page that shows the mufflers and the actuators as well as a video/sound clip. I'm wondering if these could be adapted as if Vettes need another vacuum operated part. One muffler on "A" bodies (RH or LH?) was shorter than the other, so maybe there would be room for the shorter muffler on a Vette?
