I have a '68 with the 427/390 in it--all original. Car has power brakes and power steering---no other creature comforts in terms of the engine compartment where belts are concerned. It's an early edition model, so no smog pump device on engine.
My problem is finding the correct belts that will fit---all of them.
If anyone out there has part numbers and source for what belts are supposed to go on this beast, please let me know.
I've tried all the traditional supply houses and Vette specialty suppliers and to date have not found the correct belts--they're either way too long or much too short.
I have a 70 which is stock. I went with Quanta Products LLC. They make GM Restoration parts. All the belts have the original markings on them. They fit perfect!
I bought them from ZIP (I didn't know who made them at the time of the order).
All '68's had the smog pump. Yours was probably taken off years ago. Check the water pump pulley and if it's stock, you'll see that there are grooves for three belts. One goes to the power steering, one to the timing gear and the other to the smog pump. A separate belt goes from the PS pulley to the alternator.
Since you don't have the smog pump, you can measure with a thin rope the length from the water pump pulley to the PS pulley to the alternator pulley. That way, you eliminate the "empty" groove on the water pump pulley.
For good pics and parts, go to Doc Rebuild's site. He's updated it and it has good reference information.
Agree with BlueL36. Although he has the name, I also have a blue L-36. All 68s came with a smog pump. Mine is also missing. I am getting by with 2 belts. (I have power steering) I don't have the shorter belt between the crank and the waterpump. I have 1 long belt that goes around the waterpump, the crank and the p/s pump. Then I have a short belt between the p/s pump and the alternator.
There is a helpful website that will give you a part number for a belt if you give the dimensions... lemme go find it.
My Blue 68 L36 Roadster was also missing the pump when I got it. PO had it in a box, and I remounted it. Mine had power steering and AC also. The hard part to find was the diverter valve. PO had thrown that away. With my setup, there was also an idler pulley. I got that from Paragon. I sold the car long ago, and don't have the AIM right this minute, but I believe it was a 3 row waterpump pulley, and 2 row crank pulley.
