I know absolutely nothing when it comes to comparing pushrods. Please help me choose which ones. They are Vortec heads and I will probably just have the 1.5 ratio rockers so that I don't have to machine the heads.
I need to know what brand and what to look for as well as what length they are supposed to be.
For example, what is the difference between these pushrods:
The comps are .029 longer than the cranes.
The comps are can be used with guide plates, not the cranes.
The comps are steel, the cranes chromemoly.
2 different animals. I agree with breathial, call Summit's tech support & ask which pushrods to use. If you are doing a stock engine, then I'm sure that Summit's brand will work fine.
That's a kit of 16 Sealed Power (aka Speed Pro) pushrods ( P/N RP5000RK ) for Gen 1 sbc ... 5/16" ... 7.794" stock length ... hardened 1010 steel can be used w/ guideplates (you probably don't have gp w/ vortec) ... they're an upgrade from stock & they'll work just fine for stock to mild street-strip ... I've used em ... very little info on em at summit but summit gets $22/16pc set ... you should be able to get em locally too.
I suspect summit shows little info on these because they're a better value to YOU than the other "name brands".
*edit* the 7.794" length is right for a gen 1 sbc with FLAT lifters (hyd or sld) ... but they're too long IF you have any roller cam.
May not hurt to check the length before you buy anything, and the tech at Summit will likely recommoned this. Summit has the tool for this, I believe it's about ten bucks if I remember right.
Thanks guys. I just didn't want to opt for the cheaper ones and then have problems down the road because they are inferior. On the other hand, if I need the more expensive ones, that's what I will get.
The only ones that you can avoid right from the start are the ones that have the ball end pressed into them. Those are what you get if you ask for cheap stock pushrods from the parts store.
After that you need to get "hardened" pushrods only if you have guideplates.
The length issue is separate and needs to be checked.
So what cam and valve springs do you plan on using? If it's not a huge solid lifter cam and with incredibly stiff springs, the cheapo push rods will probably never give you a problem. It's rather hard to bend push rods with a hydraulic cam, unless you get coil bind like the retards that put my cylinder heads on originally.
Looks like I need to get one of these tools and an adjustable pushrod.
If you run OE type stamped "shoe" rocker the stock length prs will be fine ... but if rocker has a rollerized tip then you should check for proper length.

yes you use a stock push rod and you measure the gap between the checker and the valve and/or the pushrod......where the gap is determines what lenght pushrod you need....can you borrow a stock pushrod to check things out?
I've not had luck with the pushrods with press-fit 'ball' ends. Found that one-piece, hardened Speed Pro pushrods worked best for my application; OEM-style rocker arms. When I had the ball-end style, I found that it took a bit more 'lash' than with the one-piece units.
