OK, heres a problem. On the 81 cruise control unit, the drive cable froms trans terminates into the unit, and a different cable leaves unit and connects to speedo. Is there a one piece cable assemble available so I can remove this part?? Thanks
Yes, ask for a cable from any year Vette where cruise was not std. I removed the cruise from my 79. It was an option that year so I just asked for a 79 non-cruise cable.
I must be missing something, late model C3s are the plushest and have lots of options available and standard. Cruise doesnt rob any power and doesnt take up any room, still dont understand getting rid of it even if it didnt work. Plus you chucked the a/c, building a track car? To each his own I guess,

My 81 has the cruise disconnected. Still uses two cables with a small connector to tie them together. I can't tell you what its called but it works. Bought the car this way.

It worked fine, but I don't care for it in this application. On my big GMC truck..yes....but not here. The AC is history as well.
I did the same thing on my '79. In the 6 years that I've owned the car I never once used the AC or the cruise control. While I was restoring my Corvette and cleaning up my engine compartment I figured I might as well remove these things and make everything in my engine compartment look simpler.
The only difficult thing with removing the AC is trying to find a new one of these (I don't know what it is called, look at the picture below) or fill in the holes that the AC lines run into and out of the condensor. This is the fiberglas cover inside of the engine compartment that covers the condensor.
The one for a Corvette without AC is smaller and doesn't have the holes cut out for the AC lines. Without the condensor, it looks like the air from the engine compartment could go straight into the interior through the heating system if these holes aren't filled.

I don't use the cruise control that often in my '81, but when I drive it out to Tucson it's soooo wonderful! The system probably weighs a whopping 10 lbs. all together and doesn't interfere with anything, really. All it does is hold the throttle at a certain position based on the speed it receives from the speedometer cable. One of the best cruise control systems I've ever really used, too. Compared to the '94 Firebird and '95 Z28 I had, it has worked MUCH better for me.
But to answer your question, yes you can just connect a cable straight from the transmission to the back of your speedometer.
Thanks for the info....got the cable ordered. Update: I was on a roll last night and removed every single piece of the computer system, including the wiring harness. A heavy trashcan to say the least. (yes, I saved the computer, relays and brackets)
Just got back from a cruise....everything left still works!!!!
With the spare tire gone....there seems to be room to move the battery back here, in a custom box. Has anyone tried this? It should help with weight distribution.
The vehicle handles better and ofcourse accelerates with more authority on the new diet. I am very pleased with the results. So far, AC compressor, spare tire and housing, windshield wipers / motor, and computer with all assoc. wiring has been removed. The body has come up a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch...almost where it should be. Next is condenser and evaporator.
I am planning on dropping 400+ hp engine with trans / rearend work to suit in the spring / summer of next year. I will working on suspension over the winter.
When I bought my 79 a few years back the cruise didn't work. A couple of years later after I installed a fresh 355 I decided to find out why. Turned out that the only problem was that the vac line to the break petal was disconnected.
