Default I got smoked by a 98 Miata???...:((((

Ok tell me something is wrong ??
I was on the freeway with my friends cruising, I'm passing up this little Mazda miata dude wants to pass me up and push on the gas, I start laughing and I push harder we were both exactly equal for like a good 2 mn the when I reached 5000 RPM I let it go and he passed me (My engine is brand new and only got 700 miles on it I didn t want to blow it)
What the hell is wrong with that picture?? how in hell a Bull**** Mazda miata 98/2000 or around is gonna work as good and better then my supposebly "Muscle car" vette???
I juts got a New engine installed in it GMPP 290 HP, new edelbrock intake, new edelbrock carb, new hedman elite headers, new mufflers, flowmaster super 40s I mean this suckers is pretty much completely new!!! and upgraded from stock, it cost me a fortune around $4500 all together for the new setup and I still got a woopin from that miata...I can t lie, my feelings got hurt!

MazdaMiata.....

And it happens.....who knows what he had under the hood.

I went to Cayuga once (local drag strip), and an old rusty rx-7 was lined up with me. I thought nothing of it, but he blew my doors off.......

At the end of the day, you have a corvette, and he has a miata............who cares who beat who in a 2 min. race.........

BTW...I don't think that a Corvette was classified as a "muscle car". Not 100 % though.

Your stock 290hp ain't what most would call "muscle".
He's in a featherweight car with not too much less horsepower, that's what gave him the advantage.
If you'd wanted real muscle, that's what you should have bought. As long as it does what you want it to when you mat the pedal, don't worry about it

Yeah but it is still kind of recongized as a muscle car for "most" people (not for me anymore !! lol
But I know my year was not one but with over 300 and som horsepower now it should smoke a stock looking and sounding miata...but you are right let s park my vette and his miata in a busy street and see who wins this attention !

Yeah just yesterday I realized that if I have a stock l-48 1975 with a 165 hp at the crank and going through the gear and stuff it probably drops to around 135 or so. Thus my sisters 4cyc corolla and her husband's Altima could probably give me a hard run for my money.. Hell my dad's 1500 v8 silverado has 270 hp with a vortec. I hope at least I start getting a lot better gas millage after the mech gets done with it.. I've been getting under 10 most of the time and thats with my driving it really soft.

Its likely You dont have the gears with that 290hp. Those little squirts Have the gears and walk away easily out on the straight away. Happens all the time. Avoid that scenario if you dont want to be humiliated, or match some higher gears to your HP & TQ, and Kick their Booty. My 2 centavos..

Even a bone stock Miata isn't slow: 1.8L engine, 140HP weighs around 2100lbs. With a 5speed (2002 and up have a 6-speed tranny) manual it's FUN

Hey mjd there was a post a while ago about almost the same thing (ford taurus was in the topic line IIRC)....
I have an '81, with a 300hp crate motor, and I got passed, while doing 90, by a dump truck. Pulling a trailer.
I could have gone faster, but at 4000 rpm, I decided after 15 minutes of this I'd either run out of gas or risk blasting engine parts all over the highway. Some of us aren't geared for this, and even if we have the HP, there's no way we're gonna take advantage of it unless we have overdrive or a 6 speed or better rear ratios.
Before this I had a 1973 Porsche 914 - a small, Miata-sized 5-speed little car. I built a 130hp, air-cooled 4 cylinder VW engine for it. It weighed 1800lbs and could hit 115 on the highway without a problem and go around corners like nothing else on the planet. It's all HP-to-weight.
Like someone already said, what are people going to remember seeing after all is said and done? A Miata? A Taurus? A Garbage truck? No, they'll remember seeing your Vette! It's always cooler to go by slowly, and let people hear you rumble past and wonder what's under the hood, than to try to wind it out and get passed by a ------- (take your pick)...

Acceleration is all about power to weight ratio. You're putting a modern flyweight up against solid steel tech of a quarter century ago.

Default Miata

Yea if you got beat then youre not close to 290 hp at the rear. I have a 96 Miata that has the 1.8L in it and its pretty fast on the SCCA courses but nothing on the highway. He must have had turbo or super in there. But I agree with the above posts, put bigger rears in your rear diff and youll feel the difference

mdjice you mave have run into a MX-5 Miata. They are turbocharged from the factory. Make 180ish horsepower and run mid 14s according to the magazines, stock! As with any factory turbo car I'm sure it's just a tune and a few easy bolt on mods to make a lot more power too. Wouldn't think it'd be too hard to get one in the 13s.

You got smoked because you installed a very low HP motor. It all comes down to HP per pound. Since you have the motor, you might look at how to shed some pounds.

I'd feel bad also!

yeah I think it was a mx 5 or some like that as far as the HP almost 300 is not that abd!? also I havn t got my car tuned for the new engine and exaust yet, (no timing done and no carb adjustments)
"put bigger rears in your rear diff " what is that? can you send me a link or something? is it expensive?
I know the vette is all about the look but I'm still pretty pissed ! the car sounds strong looks mean and runs....Weak!!
I'm just gonna sell my c3 and go get a miata now!....YEAH RIGHT !!
