Default Rebuilt tran or new ??

got my transmission rebuilt a couple months ago, work was terrible and this morning my I can hear and feel klunking in thru my speed **** stick...sounds like another expensive job

The mec who installed my exhaust told mei had a good treanny ..."The big one" don t really know what it means (I have a february 77 4 speed)
Shoud I get the actual tran rebuilt to new or should I by a brand new one? like the ones from jegs for like 1200 or something what the best?
the mec told me my tran was wa better then the new ones once rebuilt but he might just try to get a fewe more bucks from a rebuilt( of course he was not the one who rebuilt it in the first place

A good option for you since budget is in mind, is a swap to a T5. They were VERY common in Mustangs, so you know they'll do fine behind your V8. It's a fairly easy swap from what I understand, and you can find salvage yard T5s for a little over $500. Buy an adapter plate for the bell house, adjust drive shaft length, and you have a 5spd Vette. Search T5 and see what you come up with.

I said the trans could be as low as $500. It'll be used. You'll still have to buy the adapter, any changes to the shifter plate, driveshaft, linkages, and if you won't be doing it, labor.

It's just nice to start with a cheaper trans, like a $500 or so T5 instead of $2000 for a new trans, and then everything else on top of that.

Yeah, if you can find a T5 from a SBC Camaro or Corvette you won't need an adapter. The drive shaft length may still be different though.
