Default Prefitting and checking for push rod length question

When checking the valvetrain geometry and pushrod length during the prefitting phase of building an engine, I obviously don't want to use and compress the new head gasket. If I put the head on the engine without a head gasket, the push rod measurement will be off. What do you use for a head gasket to ensure the proper measurements? Are you using old gaskets that are the correct compressed thickines or at least close to such? Thanks for any tips.

with the proform checker you torque everythng down put in the push rod and then measure the gap either between the valvle stem or the pushord to determine the correct length of pushrod

Yes, as Bob said, u check the p-rod length after the head is installed & torqued down.
U should read dgruenke's thread Which pushrods should I get? - as it covers this method and details fairly well.

its a really simple tool to use....it will hit either the valvestem or the push rod first...or possibly both at the same time....you measure the gap and make a decision accordingly

You can use an old gasket like what you will end up with ... or just add the comp thickness of whatever gasket you will use to the dimension you get ... ie you measure 7.779" without gasket but you're gonna use a FP 1094 shim (ct 0.015") ... so 7.779" + 0.015" = 7.794"

*addendum* was out on JI about 2 wks ago ... attended St.Timothy's ACC & then met w/ old friend that runs JI Cycle & UHaul.

Thanks for the information. I'm sure I can probably come up with a used gasket I need from some of my friends. I'll be helping a friend tomorrow to put an engine in his '66 Chevelle.

Next time your'e in town, give me a email. Those guys at JI Cycle do some great stuff.
