Does anyone know if an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold will fit under a stock 1977 hood? I saw a posting from a member that said it fit in his 77 but Summit says it won't. I want the RPM because I intend to replace my stock L48 with a crate next year. Until then I want change the intake and covert to headers and true duals.

I have an '80 with the medium rise hood that they used from '73-79 or something like that and I am using the performer rpm with a Holley 600 and it fits. I am also using a Summit drop base air cleaner with the reusable filter. No problems.
Thanks for the reply. I read somewhere that the RPM is 1 inch higher than the standard Performer manifold. I have seen K&N air cleaners that have a 1 1/4 inch dropbase. Did you use a drop base? If so which one? I have the stock Qjet.

If you are using standard heads everything should bolt on up. I'm using Vortec heads and have had to improvise a few things for the moment. The bolt pattern for an intake for the vortec heads has the bolts going straight down. The a/c brace won't work, I made a bushing for the alternator bracket to mount it from the front and the vacuum diaphram at the back of the motor I have mounted to a plate I made. That will change as soon as I can fabricate something that will work a little better.
Can't use the stock air cleaner if you go to the RPM, basically. Did the L48 have the L-82 intake in '77? I'm not 100% sure, but I'm betting not. So basically I'd say there'd be no real loss by going with an aftermarket air cleaner in a '77. I know the '79 - '81 all had the L-82 ram air system so it'd be non-beneficial to go to an aftermarket air cleaner for those, in my opinion.
i don't know how much different the rpm is from the standard performer, but i just put the performer in my 77 l-48 with an l-82 engine. i also put a performer 750 cfm carb on it too, and with a 4" air cleaner it's mighty close. if you use the q-jet, you need an adapter plate, so i am assuming it won't work, but then again i am not sure.
hope this helps

For now I will be keeping my stock heads. My first step towards improving performance will be to remove all emissions, install headers, true duals, and the best intake mainfold that will fit. I will swap out the Qjet if I have to do a rebuild. That may be required becaise this car has been in storage for a long time.
From your photo it looks like you removed emissions. Can you give me some tips?
Since the stock heads will now be the limiting factor is there any real benefit to installing the Performer RPM instead of the standard Performer? I don't want to create problems if there is no real benefit.
I havent yet decided if I will buildup the L48 or replace it. I first want to see how it reacts to these changes. I will then determine if it is strong enough to warrant a rebuild. I was considering vortec but that would mean a complete top end change and I was not ready for that just yet. BTW how is performance after the switch to vortec?
With the raised hood you can fit almost anything under it. On a '78 I had, I simply removed the sound deadner for more clearance with a LT-1 intake and a Moroso Air Cleaner.
